Asia-Pacific Improvisers Symposium
< Back to EventsIn the past decade, European institutions of higher music education have been actively reshaping their approach to improvisation, recognising its vital role as both an art form and an academic subject. This growing conversation has sparked significant curriculum changes across Europe, supported by initiatives like METRIC, which advocates for improvisation within the dynamic landscape of music creation and education.
In the Asia-Pacific region, the diversity of musical cultures here also offers a rich foundation for exploring improvisation – not only as a form of artistic expression but also as a powerful tool for learning.
SYMPOSIUM DETAILS AND CALL
Asia-Pacific Improvisers Symposium
Date: 21-22 February 2025
Location: Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, Singapore
The Asia Pacific Improvisers Symposium aims to bring together a diverse group of artists and practitioners from all over the Asia Pacific region. Rather than focusing on the presentation of academic research papers we aim to bring performances to the stage and stimulate networking and discussion between the participants of the symposium. During the symposium we provide space for the presentation of regional reports as well as a session on how to create opportunities to work together in the future. The symposium will be concluded with a spectacular concert of the YST Orchestral Institute, featuring creative work of our students.
We are looking for individuals or collectives who:
- Come from, or are currently based in the Asia-Pacific region AND
- Are practicing improvisation as an artform and/or use improvisation as a pedagogical tool
If you are interested in being part of this symposium, please fill in the application form here. Selected individuals and collectives will be contacted via email in December 2024.
For any queries, please contact symposium coordinator Joan Tan.
