Date: 24 Sep, 2018 - 26 Sep, 2018 , n/a
Location: Brunei Darussalam

Brunei Darussalam – Expression Music Academy, International School Brunei (ISB) and Jerudong International School (JIS) collaborated to welcome a group of advanced music students from Yong Siew Toh (YST) Conservatory of Music, Singapore.

The students from YST were welcomed in the three institutes where they conducted workshops and masterclasses from Grade 1 to Diploma level according to their instrument specializations.

The visiting students were Natalie Koh, Violin; Alice Cahya Putri, Voice; Lau Hui Ping, Trumpet; Chen I-Hsuan, Horn; Hoong Miane Sng, Tuba; Teo Shao Ming, Flute; Chiang Yung Yuan, Clarinet; and Ilysia Tan, Composition/Piano, were all student teachers in their 4th year of studies towards their Bachelor’s Degree.

Accompanying and guiding the YST students was project supervisor YST’s Professor Ty Constant.

Lily Chiam, Founder & Director of Expression Music shared that, “the YST students pleasantly interacted with our students and were able to respectfully observe Bruneian culture during their stay. This collaboration between Brunei and Singapore has brought forth tremendous benefits by giving the Singapore students the opportunity to discover the musical levels of Bruneian students. They in turn, inspired the students in Brunei to pursue higher music degrees in order to enhance the brilliance of music making and to preserve music excellence as a heritage of the nation.”

According to Nicholas Smith, JIS Head of Music Performance, the visit was a wonderful opportunity for musical cooperation between the four institutions. He added that, “the YST students gained a valuable teaching experience while our students were inspired by their enthusiasm. Collaborative music making created a win-win situation for all those involved. We look forward to welcoming YST students here again in the future.

The day was concluded with an informal musical performance by the students at the Expression Music Concert Hall. The students were also taken to a delightful tour around Brunei’s iconic locations on the following day.
