WORKSHOP AND MASTERCLASS BY COMPOSER DR. HIM SOPHY

UiTM Faculty of Music is proud to present this first ever visit of the highly acclaimed composer Dr. Him Sophy to Malaysia.  Composer Dr. Him Sophy trained at the Moscow Conservatory of Music as well as the Royal University of Fine Arts in Phnom Penh. A survivor of the Civil War and Khmer Rouge regime, Sophy received a scholarship to study in Russia where he stayed for 14 years and obtained a PhD. Among his many compositions are the rock opera “Where Elephants Weep” which is the first opera in Cambodian music history, “A Bend in The River” a first new music composed for the traditional Pin Peat ensemble, “Memory from Darkness” which is played every day on the audio tour in the killing field museum of Choeung Ek in Phnom Penh, and The Bangsokol: A Requiem for Cambodia which had its world premiere in Melbourse Art Centre in October 2017, then at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York in December 2017, and more recently at the Philharmonie de Paris at Cite de la musique in May 16, 2018.
